Location:

Attawapiskat is an isolated First Nations Community, accessible by aircraft or boat and is located in Northern Ontario at the mouth of the Attawapiskat River which drains into James Bay.  The community has always been a gathering place for local Native people for centuries and is home to  to the Mushkego or Omushkego James Bay Cree

 
 
 
 
 
Access / Airports / Transportation:

The primary access to Attawapiskat  is either scheduled or charter aircraft.which is available from Timmins, Ontario.  Check out the Flights link located above for details on airlines, schedules and fares.  If flight schedules do not meet your timetable, you can also arrange private charter flights from Thunder Bay, Timmins as well as several other northern Ontario locations.

The Attawapiskat Airport is open year 'round and offers a 3,500' gravel strip constructed in the 1970's.  During the winter months the people of this community are connected to other James Bay Coastal Communities by a temporary winter road, constructed and maintained usually from mid January to early spring.  Fuel, construction material and other bulk goods are freighted overland at this time, using these winter roads which connects the communities of Attawapiskat, Kashechewan, Fort Albany, Moosonee and Moose Factory. From Moosonee the Ontario Northland Railway runs south to Cochrane.

Currently there is much mining activity going on in the Attawapiskat area and demand is high for the very limited accommodations available.  Visitors to the area should plan well in advance and ensure reservations are secured.  Click the above hotel link for complete details on accommodations.  If you are unable to secure accommodations, the only alternative would be to secure accommodations in Timmins or Thunder Bay and fly in and out on the same day
