About Nakina

As of 2004 Nakina remains focussed on tourism, diminished pulp and paper operations, and support of other more northern communities (food, fuel and transportation). Mining and minerals industries are often seen as a source of further growth, though the Canadian Shield geology of the area makes extraction of minerals like gold an expensive and uneconomical operation.

Access to the remote northern community of Nakina is by Via Rail, road (highway 584 from highway 11) and small aircraft service at the town's small airport.

Location:
Nakina is a small northern Ontario community located at the end of highway 584 which runs north of Geraldton and highway 17.  Nakina is on the mainline of the CN railway.  The town is 620 km north of Thunder Bay.

Access / Airports / Transportation:
The primary access to Nakina is via highway 17 and highway 584.  There is an airport in Nakina and scheduled air service is available to Thunder Bay as well as several northern communities such as Fort Hope and Lansdowne House.  Nakina Air Service operates the airport and flight services.

Accommodations / Services / Attractions / Events:
Nakina was once an important railway service point and also supported a vibrant forestry industry.  However much of these activities have been cut back or curtailed and now Nakina's main industry is the numerous tourists that visit the area each year to enjoy the rugged wilderness and spectacular fishing and hunting in and around the region.  There are several outfitters and lodges in the area and we suggest you click our Fishing link for a complete list of services.  If you are looking only for overnight motel accommodations, you will find an excellent selection in Geraldton located less than an hour's drive from Nakina.
