About Red Lake

Red Lake is a small amalgamated municipality 535 km north-west of Thunder Bay (273 air miles) The municipality consists of 6 small towns and has a local population of approximately 8,500 people.  Red Lake is known as the "Norseman Capital of the World", referring to the Noordyn Norseman  aircraft which played a significant role in the development of the area.

The three primary sources of employment in Red Lake include: support services for the numerous mines surrounding the town, small scale logging and a tourism sector specializing in hunting and fishing.

Tourists and residents alike are drawn to Norseman Park, where they can meet “under the Norseman”.  The park is easy to find (because of the bright yellow plane suspended in mid-air), but the plane is more than just a landmark.  Noorduyn Norseman CF-DRD also reflects our rich aviation heritage.  Each summer, the Red Lake celebrates Norseman Days, and boasts the largest  gathering of airworthy Norseman aircraft in the world.  In fact, this sturdy Canadian bushplane has come to symbolize our community.  It is why we are known as - Red Lake - Norseman Capital of the World!
